It’s August.
How?!
The kids are screaming, “Nooo!” (…and yes, we homeschool mamas are right there with them). But it’s happening—summer is winding down and homeschool days are peeking right around the corner.
This is the time of year we make our lists, double-check our supplies, and try really hard not to go over budget. I’ve learned the hard way—Overbuying means clutter, and clutter means overwhelm—definitely not the vibe when you want to keep your sanity intact!

After years of trying all kinds of setups, I’ve nailed down the Top 10 Homeschool Room Essentials that actually earn their keep.
1. Magnetic Letters
Perfect for early readers. These are great for hands-on learning—kids can feel, move, and rearrange letters, which helps with sensory learning and word isolation.
2. Math Manipulatives
Basic math just clicks better when kids can see and touch it. My faves? A clock with moving hands and those classic snapping counting cubes.
3. Portable Dry Erase Boards + Markers
I used to have a massive wall-mounted dry erase board—turns out, totally unnecessary. Personalized lap-sized boards are way more practical (and easier to store). And when it comes to math, working problems out on a dry erase board can be a total game-changer for kids who struggle.
4. Wall Pop Maps
I love these. They peel off, stick again, and move wherever my latest “let’s reorganize the homeschool room” mood takes me. Right now, I have the World and USA ones hanging in my school room.
5. Individualized Binders with Pencil Cases & Dividers
Each kid gets their own binder, complete with a zip-up pencil pouch stocked with pencils, erasers, and coloring supplies. No more “Moooom, where’s my pencil?!” Don’t forget to add subject dividers—they make organization so much easier!
These Samsill binders are a trusted, family-owned American brand from Texas. They come in a wide variety of sizes and vibrant colors—perfect for keeping things organized in a large family with individualized needs. Built to last all year long, these eco-friendly binders are a smart, affordable choice for any homeschool room.
6. Composition Notebooks
One per subject—plus extras for toddlers so they can “do school” too. (Trust me, it’s worth it.) And don’t forget to give those toddlers their own set of markers—they’ll love feeling included!
7. Electric Pencil Sharpener
Because ain’t nobody got time for endless hand-cranking—although they are a little addictive. Just watch out for kids using them as the ultimate procrastination tool!
8. Index Cards
Flashcards = memory work magic. I keep a set of permanent markers handy for quick DIY sets.
9. Stapler & Hole Puncher
Classic office supplies, yes, but you’ll use them more than you think.
10. Printer (and Paper!)
Printers can be fussy, but they’re a homeschool necessity. We love our HP with refillable liquid ink—it’s saved us so many “out of ink” headaches.
Bonus: Laminator + Sheets
Not essential… but oh-so-fun. Want your flashcards to last forever? Laminate them. Chore charts? Laminate them. Honestly, I find reasons to use mine all the time.
