Top 5 Must-Visit National Parks for Family Adventures

We absolutely love exploring America’s National Parks — and I know we’re not in the minority. These incredible parks offer breathtaking scenery, unforgettable family memories, and affordable outdoor adventures. My husband Paul and I have made it a goal to visit as many U.S. National Parks as possible with our kids. Below is our list of the Top 5 Must-Visit National Parks for Family Adventures, from our experiences so far along with what makes each one special for kids and parents alike.

#5 Olympic National Park – Most Unique & Best Hiking for Families

Nestled in northwest Washington State, Olympic National Park is one of the most diverse national parks in the U.S., featuring four distinct ecosystems — including the only rainforest in the country. This park tops our list for best kid-friendly hiking and natural variety. The wildlife is minimal in terms of danger, so it felt like a safer space for younger children to roam and explore.

Some highlights from our visit:

  • Hoh Rainforest – Lush, magical, and perfect for kids hike and experience nature
  • Sol Duc Falls – A short, family-friendly hike to a beautiful waterfall.
  • The Pacific Coastline – We walked along the beach and admired the beautiful north section of the Pacific coast with its rock formations. You may even spot a seal!

Even with misty weather, Olympic was unforgettable. Just watch out – don’t step on a banana slug!

#4 Acadia National Park – Best Family Camping Experience

Located on the scenic coast of southern Maine, Acadia National Park was hands-down our favorite National Park family camping destination so far. We stayed outside the park at a private i full-hookup campground, which gave us easy access to the park while still having a comfortable camping experience. (Read more about why we are glampers experience here.)

Why Acadia made our top list:

  • Main Loop – This scenic drive includes must-see stops like Thunder Hole and Jordan Pond.
  • Cadillac Mountain – the highest point in the park. It can be hiked, but with the young children we decided driving up was best. Don’t forget to reserve your spot! You do not want to miss the expansive coastal views from the top of Cadillac Mountain.
  • Great Head Trail – Enter at Sandy Beach and then also see beautiful views overlooking the coast!
  • Schoodic Point – A raveled areas are hidden gems with fewer crowds and amazing views.
  • Bass Harbor Lighthouse – Best spot to view the sunset. It does get crowded so if you are driving head down early! Or skip the car and walk – walking will bring less stress.
  • Tide Pools & Hikes – We spent hours exploring tide pools with the kids. Our favorite ones were Ship Harbor and Wonderland trails. The park offers both easy and advanced trails, so we stuck with the beginner-friendly ones and plan to come back for the tougher hikes when our kids are older.

We visited in early October, and the weather was surprisingly mild. While swimming at Sand Beach was a no-go, the magical fall foliage and coastal views made it a pleasant and wonderful time to visit.

#3 Yellowstone National Park – Best National Park for Wildlife Viewing

Yellowstone National Park, located in northwestern Wyoming, is the first National Park in the United States, and it’s one of the most iconic parks to visit with kids. With its abundant wildlife, geysers, hot springs, and waterfalls, Yellowstone is perfect for a family adventure.

Even during a short visit, you’re almost guaranteed to spot bison, along with elk and other animals. Yellowstone truly shines as the best National Park for wildlife encounters. Some can’t-miss highlights include:

  • Old Faithful Geyser – Always a crowd-pleaser and a great educational stop for kids.
  • Yellowstone Falls – Breathtaking views and scenic overlooks.

We spent a full, amazing day in the park visiting the top attractions. We visited on the way to stay staying with Paul’s family. After our day visit, we rented a house about an hour outside the park, which made it easy to return for a more laid-back day on the Montana side, where we enjoyed an afternoon in one of the calm rivers.

There is so much more I want to explore here, and Yellowstone is definitely on our bucket list for a return trip. It’s a park that keep you wanting to go back for more!

#2 Grand Teton National Park – Best Lakes and Swimming Spots

Grand Teton National Park, also located in Wyoming, is a soul-fulfilling National Park known for its majestic mountain range and crystal-clear alpine lakes. The park offers a peaceful escape and stunning scenery that leaves a lasting impression.

We did some short hikes and visited a few of the lakes, but our favorite memory was simply spending a relaxing afternoon at Jenny Lake. The calm water, beautiful shoreline, and mountain reflections made it one of the most enjoyable days of our trip.

One of the most breathtaking features of the Grand Tetons is how jagged and sharp the peaks are—since the mountains are geologically young, the dramatic skyline looks almost unreal. It’s the perfect National Park for swimming, lake picnics, and scenic photography.

While you’re in the area, don’t forget to make a stop in Jackson Hole, a fun Western-style town just outside the park.

At the end of our day trip, we even say a grizzly bear as we were leaving the park. Thankful we were in the car, but an unforgettable experience, and much cooler than the zoo!

#1 Badlands National Park – Best Natural Playground for Kids

Badlands National Park, located in South Dakota, might not be on everyone’s top National Parks list—but it surprisingly earned the #1 spot for our family. It was an unexpected highlight of our summer road trip when we drove out to Cody, Wyoming to visit friends and stopped at several parks along the way.

At the time, we had five kids, and our youngest, Drew, was only 8 years old. Of all the National Parks we visited, the one they keep asking to go back to? The Badlands. The park’s rugged geological formations, layered rock landscapes, and open space made it the ultimate natural playground. The kids loved climbing, sliding down the formations, and exploring the terrain freely.

Even though it’s been five years, they still talk about the Badlands! It’s not a place we would plan an entire vacation around, but it’s definitely a must-visit stop—perfect for a day trip that’s packed with adventure, exploration, and memorable views.

When visiting these National Parks, aside from Acadia National Park, we spent full, long days exploring but did not stay overnight inside the parks. However, we definitely plan to return and explore all of these family-friendly National Parks more in our near future.
