Labor Day Weekend at Gratefully Wild Home: Appaloosa Music Festival & Family Hiking

Each year on Labor Day weekend, the Appaloosa Music Festival in Front Royal, VA kicks off. This particular weekend was so special as we were able to spend most of it with very dear friends of ours.

One of my best friends is fighting pancreatic cancer—she is amazing and is living life to the fullest while putting up a courageous fight. She and her husband are such a beautiful example of faith during the most challenging times of life. She was well enough for us to come and visit and celebrate her husband’s 40th birthday. Spending time with their family and attending such a family-friendly event left our hearts full, hopeful, and grateful.

Highlights of the Appaloosa Music Festival in Virginia

  • Family tickets – no matter if you have 1 or 12 kids, the whole family goes in at the family rate!
  • Great bluegrass & folk music – Scythian is there every year and always a favorite.
  • Unique vendors
  • Free Kid Zone (ages 10 & up can go in without an adult!)
  • Food Trucks – we got ice cream there, but we packed hot dogs and walked back to the car to eat them. It was a good break and much more budget-friendly. Yet, if you want the food truck experience, you’ll have lots to choose from!
  • Lots of beer, wine, and hard cider
  • Camping options to stay the whole weekend—we didn’t camp, but walking through the campgrounds was a neat experience.
  • Clean, family-friendly event

On Labor Day, we were also able to meet other close family friends for a short hike. Hiking with just our family, everyone acts like they can’t do it—but add friends to the mix? The kids are invincible. Just pack lots of snacks & water! Oh, and Band-Aids—guaranteed someone will fall, and a Band-Aid makes a quick recovery whether there is blood or not.

Jumping back into the second week of school was a hard transition after such a fun weekend. Plus, the first two weeks of school are always the hardest as everyone is trying to get back into a new routine. Yet with perseverance, as we enter our third week, the kids are starting to settle.
