Week #1 of Homeschool and School Year 2025-2026!

Week #1 of school is officially behind us, and it’s hard to believe we’re starting the 2025–2026 school year! We’re kicking off a fresh start at a new hybrid homeschool co-op, and my kids were so excited they were in the car 20 minutes early (well… except for the teenager who spends way too long on his hair).

The day before school started was a challenge. Coming down from our fun summer, Paul and I were still recovering too. The mix of excitement for a new school year and the sadness that summer was ending left the kids feeling needy and restless. I took deep breaths and said a silent prayer to stay calm: “Lord Jesus, give me strength.” It helped me survive dinner and bedtime chaos.

We’ve also started a month-long screen-free challenge for kids (except for our weekly family movie night). I’m not anti-screens—they’re part of our culture—but new routines need focus. Taking screens away helps the kids prioritize responsibilities and encourages creativity. One week in, I already notice the kids are happier and using their imaginations more.

This practice is great for parents too! It’s tempting to hand over a video game when things get tough or everyone needs attention at once, but it teaches all of us to handle challenges without distractions.

At bedtime, I take a moment to thank God for the day’s blessings—especially after a tough one. Practicing gratitude keeps me positive and models healthy habits for my children. At family dinners, we’ve started a tradition called “Favorite Part of the Day.” Everyone shares their favorite moment, even when we have company. It’s simple, joyful, and brings our family closer together.

I’m praying for a successful school year. It’s hard to believe this is the last year I won’t have a high schooler—life flies by so fast! Here’s our grade roundup: Drew (8th), Samantha (6th), Kateri (5th), Theo (3rd), Adelaide (2nd), Gregory (Pre-K), and Joshua—the youngest, who always keeps us on our toes.
