Essential Fall Wellness Products Every Family Needs This Season

Turning leaves, pumpkin patches, apple cider, excitement about Halloween—and then a sneeze and sniffle! Oh no! This beautiful season unfortunately brings those inevitable viruses. Before those pesky germs make the rounds, it’s worth taking a few minutes to stock your family’s wellness kit. Here’s a peek at my personal go-to remedies that I always keep on hand for when illness strikes. (Not medical advice—just what’s worked for our family of 9!)

1. Vitamin C We Use in Our Family Wellness Routine

Vitamin C is always an important one in our home. I try to keep it consistent for the kids, especially during busy seasons or when we’re around others who are under the weather.

The easiest way to give it to them is through Emergen-C. I know it’s not perfect ingredient-wise, but it gets the job done—especially when multiple kids need support and I don’t want a battle at supplement time.

I also really like Thorne Buffered Vitamin C. When I’m able, I mix it with orange juice for a boost that goes down easy.

2. Vitamin D

We don’t always use supplements, since we try to get Vitamin D naturally through food and sunshine. But during seasons when we feel like we might need a little extra, I’ll sometimes add it to our routine.

Personally, we’ve used Thorne Vitamin D and Mary Ruth’s Vitamin D —both are easy to use, and Mary Ruth’s is especially convenient for kids

3. Garlic

Fresh garlic is a favorite in our home, especially during the colder months. We add it to lots of meals—not just for the flavor, but because it’s something our family has leaned on for generations when we want to support our wellness naturally.

If the kids aren’t fans, I’ll finely chop it and mix with a bit of honey, or sneak extra into soups and sauces. Those who don’t mind taking it straight sometimes use a capsule version for convenience.

4. Elderberry

Elderberry has long been used in many families as a natural way to support wellness—especially during the colder seasons. I’ve made syrup at home before, but I also love the convenience of purchasing a high-quality version.

Mary Ruth’s elderberry supplements are a favorite in our home, and they come in both kid and adult versions. We reach for them when we want a little extra support, and the kids love the taste.

5. Zinc: MaryRuth Organics Zinc Supplements for Immune Support

Zinc is an important nutrient that many people include in their wellness routines, especially during the colder months. I usually give zinc drops once a day as part of our family’s wellness habits. MaryRuth’s offers zinc drops are formulated for toddlers and adults, which we’ve used and liked. They’re toddler-friendly and have great reviews on Amazon—which gave me confidence to give to my kids. As always, consult your healthcare provider to determine what’s right for your family. Results may vary.

6.Turmeric: A Traditional Herb in Many Wellness Practices

Turmeric is a popular natural spice that many people enjoy for its flavor and traditional use. For any of my children who can swallow capsules, I often give turmeric supplements as part of our wellness routine. Thorne’s Curcumin Phytosome 1000 mg (Meriva) is clinically studied and designed for high absorption. According to the brand, it supports health in joints, muscles, GI tract, liver, and brain.* (These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. )For younger kids, I like making a turmeric tea using Frontier’s turmeric and ginger blend. Ginger is an amazing spice as well, adding both soothing flavor and warmth.

7. Essential Oils for Natural Wellness

I love using essential oils in our home—especially when guests are over or we’re heading into a busy season.

My favorite essential oil brand is Plant Therapy. They offer affordable, high-quality oils that I feel good about using with my family. Some of the oils I always keep on hand include:

These last two blends are part of the “Feeling Good” set, which has been helpful during high-germ seasons in our home.

I like to diffuse lavender and eucalyptus together—it’s one of my favorite blends when someone’s feeling run down. I often mix essential oils with coconut oil to gently rub on the chest or back of the neck. I use tea tree behind the ears sometimes too, but always diluted.

One reason I love Plant Therapy is that they clearly label which oils are designed for use around children—it takes the guesswork out of choosing what’s right for our family.

We’ve added Plant Therapy diffusers to several rooms, and they’ve held up beautifully. I often get compliments on them—they’re simple, attractive, and work great. Every order even comes with a fun little sticker, which my kids love!

Diffuse - Anytime, anyplace with Plant Therapy

8. Vapor Rubs for Soothing

When congestion hits, vapor rubs provide a soothing, relaxing effect. I love Maty’s Rub for its natural ingredients and effectiveness. Although it’s labeled as a chest rub, I always apply it to the bottoms of feet too, which can be very comforting.

9. Humidifiers for a Comfortable Environment

A humidifier is a great tool to add moisture to the air during dry seasons or when coughs and congestion make breathing uncomfortable. I personally prefer Vicks Humidifiers for their reliability and performance.

Keep in mind humidifiers can collect mold, so it’s important to clean them regularly before each use to ensure healthy air quality.

10. Soothing Herbal Tea to Support Wellness

Herbal tea is a comforting drink with a variety of traditional uses. Licorice tea is a favorite in our family for its rich flavor and soothing qualities. Davidson’s Tulsi Licorice blend has become a staple in my cabinet, featuring many wonderful herbs. Don’t forget to add honey for extra soothing relief!

11. Homeopath

I appreciate Boiron Chestal as a homeopathic option we sometimes use for cough support. I follow manufacturer guidelines for dosing.

I read in a homeopathic book that remedies like Chestal and licorice tea should be spaced at least an hour apart, so I follow that rule when giving both.

Another homeopathic remedy I like to keep on hand is Boiron Oscillococcinum. I usually pack it for travel days and have it ready for the kids when we’re on the go. It’s just one of those staples that’s earned a spot in our family wellness kit.

Another homeopathic I personally keep around is Apis. I like having it just in case someone gets a bug bite or sting—it’s one I reach for often.

12. Activated Charcoal Capsules – Substance Adsorption from MaryRuth Organics

Activated charcoal has been a helpful option for us during upset stomachs. It’s available in capsules or powder, which works well for younger kids.

While it’s not a cure, we’ve found it useful to have on hand as part of our family wellness supplies.

13. NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)

A pediatrician once introduced me to NAC as a supplement some families use to support general wellness. For those who can swallow capsules, I include it in our routine occasionally, sometimes mixing it with juice for younger kids.

14. Wild Cherry Bark

Wild Cherry Bark is a traditional herbal option I keep in my wellness cabinet. I only give it to children ages 8 and up and usually use a smaller portion for my kids. It’s a comforting part of our wellness routine during cold season.

15. Epsom Salt Baths for Relaxation and Comfort

Epsom salt baths are a favorite way to help my family relax and unwind, especially when someone isn’t feeling their best. I use Dr. Teal’s Epsom Salt for quality. To enhance the experience, I add a couple drops of Eucalyptus Dives and Lavender essential oils for a soothing, natural boost.

16. Nasal Aspirator and Saline for Gentle Nasal Care

Last year, a respiratory therapist introduced me to the convenience of a battery-powered nasal aspirator, which is easier to use than traditional bulbs. Before using, it’s helpful to apply saline drops.

While your child might not love it, keeping nasal passages clear is an important part of everyday care.

17. Pulse Oximeter: A Must-Have Health Tool

I’m ending with the pulse oximeter because it’s one of the most useful health tools to have at home. My sister suggested it as a thoughtful baby shower gift.

Knowing my kids’ oxygen levels has helped us know when to seek immediate medical care. While home care can support recovery, there are times when medical attention is critical—and a pulse oximeter can be an important guide.

Signs of Respiratory Distress to Watch For

(From my experience and tips from nurses:)

  • Oxygen Saturation Below 92%: Use the pulse oximeter on the big toe, index finger, or thumb for a steady reading. If it stays below 92%, call your doctor or head to the ER. If it drops to 90% or below, call 911 immediately.
  • Neck Retractions: If you see a gap or pulling in the center of the neck when your child breathes, it means they are struggling to breathe.
  • Belly Breathing: When the whole belly rises with effortful breathing and ribs are visible, it’s a sign of respiratory distress. My youngest experienced this during a severe RSV infection that required hospital care.
  • Fingernail Test: Press the baby’s fingernail; color should return within two seconds. Slow color return can indicate poor oxygenation.

Again, this is just one mom’s experience and opinion, not medical advice. Please always check with your health provider for proper dosage and recommendations. I hope this helps you build your illness arsenal and stay prepared.
