Our Family’s Halloween and All Saints Day Celebrations + Easy DIY Costume Ideas

This week was such a full and festive one for our family, filled with Halloween and All Saints Day celebrations! While I’m not a huge fan of all the junk candy, the fun of dressing up and the joyful festivities definitely make it all worthwhile.

The kids were finally able to wear the costumes they’d been planning and looking forward to for months. Of course, we kept things budget-friendly as always. Here’s our Halloween 2024 lineup:

  • Drew went as Harry Potter — a fantastic Salvation Army find!
  • Samantha dressed as Susan from The Chronicles of Narnia. She had a maxi sleeveless dress with a green bottom, thrifted another dress for the top half, made her own bow, and I bought her the headpiece.
  • Adelaide and Gregory proudly became Nya and Kai from Ninjago. They wore ninja costumes, and I added some Lego-inspired eyebrows with face paint for the finishing touch.
  • For Joshua, I quickly put together a classic Redskin football player costume. Being the youngest of seven, his outfit had to come together fast!
  • Lastly, Kateri and Theodore were mischievous lemmings from Netflix’s Grizzly and the Lemmings. They dressed all in blue, and I painted their noses black. I initially planned to paint their whole faces blue, but it didn’t look quite right—too ghostly—so the simpler look worked best, and they loved being the playful little lemmings.

I also want to share about a favorite recipe I brought to our homeschool group’s All Saints Day potluck — the Farmhouse on Boone sourdough skillet. I actually double the meat and topping and bake it in a huge lasagna pan to feed everyone! This annual event is so special to my children. They get to dress up as saints and enjoy a huge party with all their friends. One of the most beautiful parts about homeschooling is the community we’ve formed, and I’m so grateful for ours.

Sadly, I didn’t get any pictures of our saint costumes this year — we just ran out of time, which is real life in a busy family! We kept the costumes simple:

  • Drew was happy to be Blessed Carlos Acutis since it was basically his normal clothes.
  • Samantha doubled her Susan from Narnia costume as Saint Cecilia.
  • For Kateri, we found basic peasant-style clothes and added a scarf for St. Bernadette.
  • Theodore was St. Anthony, and luckily we already had a monk costume — the zipper was broken, but safety pins saved the day!
  • Adelaide wanted to be St. Philomena, so we picked a pretty red dress from her closet and paired it with a gold cape from the dress-up box.
  • Gregory wore a knight’s cape as St. Michael.

All Saints Day is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the saints and foster community.

To end this post, I have to share a little story from our seven-year-old comedian, Theodore. Life is never dull with these kids!

It was a busy week with appointments and commitments, so I wasn’t home much. Those days can be tough, but homeschooling is a lifestyle, and we work as a family to get things done. I’m blessed that Paul works from home, so I can leave the older kids with lists when I need to be out. We’re still helping them build the habit of staying productive while I’m away.

One evening at dinner, I was giving a little “mom lecture” about needing the house to keep running smoothly even if I’m not there all day. Theo, quick as ever, quipped, “Where is the house running to?” Kids really do provide the best comic relief.

Here’s Theodore, our joyful comedian — and proud grower of these pumpkins, which he grew himself over the summer. SO proud!
